The current recession is undoubtedly one of the most gripping in recent history and for many of us we have not experienced anything quite like it. It started in 2nd quarter of 2008 and, according to an Office of National Statistics report 'The impact of the recession on the labour markets' published in May 2009, the first three quarters of the current recession have seen a larger increase in unemployment than either the 1990s or 1980s recessions. How long it will last and perhaps more importantly how quickly the economy can recover remains to be seen.
In times of financial uncertainty the learning and development budget is often a target as a short term saving. And at the same time budgets are squeezed there are greater demands placed on the L&D function; down-sizing may see staff reallocated to different tasks, consolidation of job roles and people taking on additional responsibilities, all resulting in additional training needs. And everything needs to be done yesterday.
How the L&D professional responds to these challenges will have a great impact on your organisation's ability to survive and prosper in these difficult times. The pressure to deliver more for less has never been greater. So, when we need to become more effective and produce efficiencies where do we turn?
