A day in the life of Stacey, one of DeltaNet’s Instructional Designers

As an Instructional Designer my job is to ensure your learning project achieves the outcomes you need, and in the most educationally effective way possible. For me the learner is king and it’s my job to excite and engage with them so that they complete the course and gain the knowledge and skills that they need.

It’s hard to describe a typical day at DeltaNet, because every day brings a new set of challenges. One day I might be designing a learning strategy, on another I might be up to my neck in content and storyboards or meeting with subject matter experts. And some days I might be directing a video shoot or audio recording session. The variety is one of the best things about my role at DeltaNet.

When we get a new project, I’ll meet with the customer and talk about what they want from the project; there overall aims, the look the feel of the project etc. Then as a team we gather around and discuss the best way for us to make it happen. We’ll come up with creative treatments and ideas for the project until we have agreed an overall instructional design strategy for the project. The next stage is to gather the content; clients sometimes have this already mapped; other times I’ll sit down with a subject matter expert and determine what the content should be or complete my own research (often a bit of all three!). The next stage is to translate this content into instructional sequences through a storyboarding process, using solid principles in instructional design and educational theory. I describe step-by-step how the course should unfold for the learner so that the developers can take the storyboard and bring the course to life. The client is involved at every step of the process, reviewing the storyboard to make sure they’re as confident as I am about the course involved.

I then work with the development team to translate the concept into reality. Of course, it doesn’t stop there. An important part of any project is quality assurance. After each course is developed, I carefully test it to make sure that the experience is as rich for the learner as it was intended to be and that it meets the aims we set at the start of the process. This means that I can be sure that the e-learning provided by DeltaNet International is rich, engaging, and provides your learners with the best possible learning experience meets your branding guidelines and writing style.

Once the course is developed I’ll then help the client with their communication strategy for the rollout and determine how the project will be evaluated. This is one of the most rewarding stages of the process for me – measuring the impact of the project and gaining the learner’s feedback.
