Shell is involved in many high investment and complex oil exploration projects throughout the world which are often difficult to manage and control. To improve the skills and experience of their project managers DeltaNet developed a simulation-based training programme to support the core competencies required by project managers working across international borders. The programme is significant in that the concept has never been attempted before and integrates activities with on the job training, removing the need for expensive and time-consuming classroom training. The programme is split into 5 sections: Planning, Development, Evaluation, Contract Execution, and Closing the Contract.
Each section holds a master database of issues, containing an introduction, objectives, links to resources and background summary along with a series of activities to complete. When a project manager commences a simulation, a random set of issues (wild card issues included) and activities are selected from the master database creating a unique experience, as the project manager works through the programme, their choices incur cost and time penalties, which are tracked and recorded in a database.
This is one of many projects completed for Shell. Others include a suite of e-learning solutions to support their Operational Excellence roll-out and SAP user training. |
